During your on-site survey, we recommend preparing yourself as a buyer. Knowledge is power and doing some preliminary research before having a company visit with you can help make the process easier for you. Equally important, it will help you feel confident in your decision after the consultation. With that in mind, our team has put together a walk-in bath tub buyer's guide checklist to help you determine the most qualified companies available.

Walk-In Bath Tub Buyer's Guide Checklist

  • How long has the company been in business? 5-10 years is ideal. There are new companies that pop up all the time but aren't real experts so  be sure to do your due diligence when selecting the best company for you.
  • Are they accredited with the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating? Don't buy unless they have an A+ rating.
  • Does the provider have positive reviews? The most reputable companies should not have any problem showing you many positive reviews.
  • How many tubs has the company installed? You want a provider that has done at least 1000 walk-in bath tub projects. Experience counts and choosing a company that does this type of work day in and day out is meaningful and will result in a higher quality product and higher quality installation.
  • How strong is the warranty? We would not recommend a company unless they offer a lifetime guarantee for the door, seal, frame and parts. Service should be included for a period of time as well.
  • Does the company make their own walk-in tubs and sell direct or is the company a reseller? We recommend a factory direct company with single source accountability. Buyers can avoid middle man mark ups by choosing to buy factory direct.
  • Did the consultant take careful measurements of your existing bathtub/shower? We've heard stories where lackluster reps just eyeball your bathtub. You don't want this. The pros will use a measuring tab and make a diagram drawing to ensure the bathtub purchased will fit perfectly into your space. All walk-in tubs are custom built so it's important that your consultant takes his/her time to get this right.
  • Did the consultant take careful measurements of all the doorways and hallways leading to the bathroom? This is sometimes overlooked - expert companies will be sure to strictly measure these elements of your home because the safety bathtub must be navigated through your home into the bathroom during installation. Sometimes doorways need to be widened and without relaying this information to the installation team, complications can arise.
  • Did the consultant take photos of all the existing bathtub/shower and doorways/hallways? A picture speaks a thousand words. Once your tub is ordered, built and shipped, these photos are relayed to the installation teams and the best way to execute a seamless installation is with preparation. This way, the technicians will have no surprises on the day the project is scheduled.
  • Did the consultant take a look at your water heater and it's capacity? Most walk-in tubs require a 40 gallon hot water heater. Larger models may even require at 50+ gallon heater. If this isn't discussed, you could be left with a wonderful walk-in tub, but not enough hot water to fill it.
  • Did the consultant discuss adding safety grab bars in other areas of your bathroom? Top providers will discuss adding a few safety grab rails in areas surrounding your bathtub. Common locations for these additions are next to your toilet or on the outside of your tub. If you are struggling to get in and out of your bathtub, it makes sense that you might have other areas where you could be facing the same challenges. You want a comprehensive solution to prevent the danger of falling in your bathroom.
  • Did the consultant discuss the option of an ADA compliant toilet to pair with your walk-in tub? Including a new, raised ADA compliant toilet as part of your installation can be another way to get a comprehensive solution in your bathroom. It should be offered.
  • Were all safety and therapy features reviewed? During the visit, your consultant should have walked through your bathroom and had you act out how you currently get into the bathtub. This is the right time to discuss the safety features and also educate you on what therapy options can be included.
  • Was the difference between air and water jets discussed? This is very important if you have sensitive skin which is typical for the aging body. Air jets provide a more gentle message whereas water jets can be more aggressive. Depending on your needs, you might choose one over the other, or both.
  • Were medical conditions and challenges addressed? Hydrotherapy is a natural remedy to combat pain. Using water, heat and buoyancy, walk-in tubs can provide natural relief to aches, pains and certain medical conditions. This must be discussed as this is different for everyone.
  • When issued a price, did the quote include removal and disposal of existing bathtub/shower? YES. Companies that break out certain portions of the project should be avoided.
  • Did the price include plumbing, electrical and finish work? Top walk-in bath tub companies should offer a turn-key solution that includes all services in one issued price quote.
  • Was timing of installation discussed? The best providers will be able to build, ship, and install your safety bathtub within two weeks from date of purchase.

Final Thoughts

We hope you are able to learn a lot from our walk-in tub info site. As a final piece of advice...be sure to NOT pay for your walk-in tub (in-full) until your installation is complete and you are satisfied. Most reputable companies will require a deposit to begin the project and that is to be expected and is normal. However, if a company asks you for the whole amount in advance, our advice is to quickly escort that consultant to the door and kindly ask them to leave.
